Zimbabwe Birth Certificate Authentication Guide

This guide explains how Zimbabwe birth certificates are authenticated for use outside Zimbabwe, including Ministry of Foreign Affairs authentication and embassy legalization requirements.

Why Authentication Is Required

When a Zimbabwe birth certificate is submitted to a foreign authority — such as an immigration department, civil registry, university, or court — the receiving country may require formal verification of the document’s authenticity.

Authentication confirms that the certificate was issued by the proper Zimbabwean authority and that the signature and official seal are genuine.

Zimbabwe and Apostille Status

Zimbabwe is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. As a result, Zimbabwean documents are not issued with apostilles. Instead, authentication is completed through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (MFAIT), and in some cases, additional embassy legalization is required.

Zimbabwe Birth Certificate Authentication Process

Step 1 – Certificate Issuance

The birth certificate must first be issued by the Registrar General’s Office of Zimbabwe.

Step 2 – MFAIT Authentication

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (MFAIT) verifies the authenticity of the Registrar General’s signature and official seal. This step confirms that the document was issued by a recognized Zimbabwean authority.

MFAIT authentication does not reissue or alter the birth certificate. It confirms the validity of the issuing authority.

Step 3 – Embassy or Consular Legalization (Where Required)

Some countries require additional legalization by their embassy or high commission following MFAIT authentication. Embassy legalization confirms that the MFAIT-authenticated document is acceptable for legal use in the destination country.

Not all countries require embassy legalization. Requirements depend on the receiving country’s legal framework.
